Celebrating 17 Years in Business: 1993 to 2010

After selling Achatz Family Restaurant (1976-1990) in downtown Armada, we began baking pies in our home for friends, family, and farmers’ markets. Soon the reputation of our pies spread, and orders from restaurants and gourmet grocers poured in. In order to keep up with the demand, we purchased a ten acre orchard and converted the barn into a full-fledged bakery. Achatz Handmade Pie Company was officially born.

When we ask our customers what they love most about Achatz pies, the number one answer is “the freshness.” The secret behind our fresh, great tasting pies? We predominantly use locally grown Michigan ingredients, such as unbleached pastry flour, sugar made from Michigan grown beets, fruits, hormone-free milk and butter, and employ people who are passionate about pie!

Our pies have been featured on Food Network, the Rachel Ray Show, Good Morning America-Weekend and have won numerous national and local awards, but they’re still down-to-earth, all natural, and wholesome, just like the people who grow the fruit, bake the pies, and eat them! We’re keeping it real, and we invite you to taste the difference!

About our pies.

Our Mission has always been to create for our customers the best pies money can buy. Our tender, flaky crust and real fruit fillings and all of the other locally grown products we use to make our pies, are fresh and natural. No wonder food writer Kate Lawson has stated “Achatz makes the best pies you'll ever eat”— The Detroit News.

Achatz Pie Company cares about what we put into our pies. Our ingredients have to stand up to our high standards for quality, purity and goodness.

Why We Close On Saturday?

Since our beginning in 1993 our pie shops have been closed on Saturday.

Our family is Seventh Day Adventists and we enjoyed this special day of rest (Exodus 20:8-11).

We are happy and thankful for these Commandments. We see a difference in our craftsmanship when we break away for refreshment, renewal and rest, spending the day to ‘remember the Sabbath’ and recognizing God as Creator as He too ‘rested’ on the seventh day after His creation.
